Economic Development. Sam Perlman of the Door County Economic Development Corporation(DCEC) presented the following information: DCEC ‘s mission is to improve the economic vitality of Door County and its residents; they work with both the public and non profits; Door County, Sturgeon Bay and Sister Bay are the only funding sources for them; they effect change where it helps businesses to grow; they have an attainable housing committee, a technology sector, and a workforce task force comprised of professionals from various employers. Significant achievements are a shipbuilding master plan and community support for the hospital. They sister with Kewaunee County and have a program for students to help build houses. A business plan competition is held with a yearly winner; they have 3 revolving loan funds—there have been 50 total loans over the life of these three; they can show seasonal residents that it is possible to spend more time and run a business here.

Rob Burke of UW Extension said he works with DCEC and has access to campus based specialists; he works with community and non profit groups to help with goals and direction; these areas are easily frustrating for a town—the County has more resources; he could help with a vision statement for the committee. Tidball asked about high speed internet. Perlman said they have been working on it for 8 years; Verizon showed why DSL would not work for Door County; the Island is doing it, but they are a small enclosed community and served by an electric co-op; broad band over power lines has problems. Jack Travis would like to see a rural act for high speed internet. Perlman said agencies exist with public and private participation, and there is money designated for that purpose, but the first round of funds is not out yet.

Perlman said their agency is at the south fire station in Sister Bay on the third Tuesday of the month from 8-12 AM. Burke said schools are trying to get services for students at home.

Val A Motel. Tidball said he and Luchterhand have made several visits to John Olson, who is eliminating some things in a dumpster placed on the property. They are taking a slow deliberate track on the issue.

Mission statement. Tidball said this is on hold until Rob Burke returns. Attracting new business while maintaining the Town’s rural character is vital. Lowry suggested contacting Julie Felhofer with USDA Rural Development. Luchterhand suggested also contacting the agency director, Stan Gruzinski.

Nelson moved, Bergen second to adjourn. Carried 4-0. 8:23 PM.
