February 24, 2010 Town Board Listening Session-Recap
TOWN OF LIBERTY GROVE. PUBLIC HEARING/LISTENING SESSION WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2010. At the Town Hall, the meeting was properly noticed.
Chairman Lowry called the hearing to order at 7:00 PM. Also attending: Supervisors Miller, Tidball, Goss, Forkert, Clerk/Administrator Kalms, Treasurer Johnson and about 30 citizens.
Lowry said the Board is here to listen, and may briefly answer some questions.
Citizens and their comments. Henry Godbout—urged to show fiscal restraint; people are trying to do more with less; need to say “no” to spending more often; get projects funded by private citizens; don’t say grants will fund all of a project. Carol Lango—appreciates the Board efforts on the post office project; at very least, plan for improving the cosmetic appearance of the remaining garage doors; physical appearance influences the assessment of a community; current information booth is inadequate; need crosswalks in Ellison Bay. Susie Watson—tourism is the attraction; not in favor of round table or using tax money to convince people to move in; not sure of mission of town board; the post office and visitor bureau are benefits. Meg Vermilion—compliments ad hoc committees and their focus; “Smart Growth” identified what would work; web site and Peninsula Pulse are good; hopes Board does not burn out on the Gills Rock issue. Jim Seaquist—agrees with first speaker; governments are spending more than they can afford; skeptical about “flavors of money” for a marina project; too many million dollar projects on the table at one time; there is a group that is starting to get irritated. Bill Street—Board needs to be fiscally responsible; locally administer zoning through the Town’s inspection firm; there is a problem with administration. Janice Thomas—thanks Board for being representatives; want more people and quality people to move here; Ellison Bay needs a better visitor center; concentrate on the smaller picture of our village.
Other statements. W. Kalms—are applying for crosswalks in Ellison Bay. Bob Tidball—will look at Val A again when weather warms up. Jill Karkau on the Val A Motel—installing a mound system caused items to be moved; he is moving forward; if items were pushed back from the road it would not be a distraction. Frank Forkert—feels Board is fiscally responsible; would be good if citizens would come to finance committee meetings to observe deliberations. Ann Lewis—budget hearing is not well attended. Ann Miller—roads are a big budget item; the bid opening for 2010 road work will be in a couple weeks. Tidball—the prevailing wage law threshold of $25,000 for Town projects is now in effect. Forkert—the Town could have its own prevailing wage if contractors would send reports in to the regulatory agency.
Lowry thanked the people for attending and complimented the other Board members and office staff for the work they do. The Board waited until 7 PM to adjourn due to the incorrect time that was mentioned in an article in the local paper. No one else showed up to speak, so Lowry adjourned the hearing at 7:02 PM.
